Are Your Feet Warning You of Circulation or Nerve Problems?

The condition of your feet and ankles can often reveal your overall health, particularly when it comes to your circulatory and nervous systems. And sometimes, the warning signs come just in time to prevent serious problems.

Two conditions that exemplify this are peripheral artery disease (PAD) and peripheral neuropathy. And below, the Foot & Ankle Center of Ohio will break down how to spot both.

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD): When Arteries Narrow

PAD occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to your limbs, most commonly the legs and feet. This narrowing restricts blood flow, leading to a range of symptoms. One key indicator of PAD is a weakened or absent pulse in the feet.

To determine if there’s an issue, our podiatrist can check two main pulse points in your feet:

  • Dorsalis Pedis Artery: Located on the top of your foot.
  • Posterior Tibial Artery: Found behind the inner ankle bone.

If these pulses are difficult to feel, it could suggest reduced blood flow due to PAD. Other signs include:

  • Pain or cramping in the legs or feet during activity (claudication)
  • Numbness or weakness in the legs or feet
  • Coldness in the lower legs or feet
  • Sores or wounds on the feet that heal slowly
  • Changes in skin color or texture

Peripheral Neuropathy: When Nerves Are Damaged

Peripheral neuropathy refers to damage to the peripheral nerves, which are the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord. This damage can disrupt sensation, movement, and other bodily functions. Diabetes is a leading cause of peripheral neuropathy, but other factors like injuries, infections, and certain medications can also contribute.

 Common symptoms include:

Detection and Diagnosis

Our podiatrists can perform a physical exam, including checking your foot pulses and assessing sensation. We may also recommend further tests, such as:

  • Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI): Compares blood pressure in the ankle to the arm to assess blood flow.
  • Nerve Conduction Studies: Measure the speed of electrical signals through nerves.
  • Electromyography (EMG): Assesses the electrical activity of muscles.
